Woodworking demo set on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Big Island wood sculptor Harold Rhodes will spend two days Dec. 29 and 30 creating a special piece while visitors watch in a courtyard area outside The Gallery, Hilton Waikoloa Village in Waikoloa on the Kohala Coast.

Rhodes will go from rough wood to a finished functional form, demonstrating techniques and discussing the relationship between wood, stone (another favorite medium of his) and man.

The artist specializes in ohia, mango and koa rocking chairs, tables, walking/hiking sticks, utensils and small storage cases but of late, he has added skate boards to his repertoire, aimed at interesting young people in his thousand-years-old craft.

Demonstrations are from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec.29 and 30.
