Give a pint of blood Monday, get a pint of ice cream

Advertiser Staff

The Blood Bank of Hawaii is teaming up with Baskin-Robbins Hawaii to provide a pint of ice cream for donors who

give the gift of life on Monday, Dec. 31.

The "Give A Pint, Get A Pint" promotion is timed to coincide with the holiday season, which is traditionally a period of high blood usage and low donor turnout, according to Blood Bank of Hawaii President & Medical Director, Robyn Yim.

"Keeping the blood supply at a safe level during the holidays is quite challenging because schools are out, people are busy with family gatherings and many people go on vacation," Yim said. "We hope this promotion will heighten awareness of the need for blood and inspire people to help meet the increasing demand for blood."

Donors who give the gift of life at a Blood Bank of Hawaii Donor Center or any blood drive on Dec. 31 will receive a coupon upon their visit.

The coupon is redeemable for one pint of ice cream in any flavor at all Baskin-Robbins Hawaii locations. Donors can enjoy the ice cream along with the satisfaction of knowing that one donation can help save up to three lives.

Blood Drive locations and hours on Dec. 31 are:

  • Dillingham Donor Center 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

  • Downtown Donor Center 6:30 a.m.–2 p.m.

  • Kaiser Moanalua Hospital – Auditorium 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

  • Kahala Mall (near Macy's Men's Department) 7:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

  • Waikele Center (next to Leonard's Malasadas) 7:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The Blood Bank of Hawaii is a nonprofit organization that provides blood to hospitals throughout the state. The donation process usually takes about an hour and includes some paper work, a confidential interview and a vital signs check, but the actual collection of blood takes only five to eight minutes.

The requirements to be a blood donor are simple:

  • Be in good health

  • Be 18 years of age or older

  • Weigh 110 pounds or more

  • Bring a valid photo ID
