Visitor arrivals down in November, but spending up

The number of visitors traveling to Hawai'i declined modestly in November from the same month a year earlier, while the amount they spent edged up, the state reported today.

A total of 563,929 visitors arrived during the month, down 1.6 percent from November 2006, according to a report released today by the State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. Visitor spending rose 0.1 percent to $933.8 million during the same period.

The average daily visitor spending for November rose to $187 from $184 a year earlier.

Among the top four visitor markets, arrivals were up 5.9 percent from Canada, up 1 percent from the U.S. West, down 6.5 percent from the U.S. East and down 6.7 percent from Japan.

Through the first 11 months of the year visitor arrivals totaled 6.7 million, down 1.1 percent from the same period a year earlier. Spending totaled $11 billion, up 0.6 percent from the same period in 2006.
