Sugar Bowl: Fans sought for flash card participation
Advertiser Staff
For two University of Hawai'i alums, the Warrior spirit for the Sugar Bowl is in the cards roughly 1,600 of them for Tuesday's game against Georgia in the Superdome.Mia Okinaga and Sonya Miyashiro have done the research and created the materials and are now asking fans that will be seated in sections 320 through 325 to participate.
The cards, when held up together, will spell out "Hawaii" and "Believe."
The cards will be on the seats before the game, and will come with instructions. At the first time out in the second quarter, fans should hold up cards that will spell out "Hawaii." At the first time out of the fourth quarter, fans again will hold up cards that will spell "Believe."
Some cards will have two sides, and the sides will be clearly marked, "Q-2" and "Q-4." If the sign shows "Q-2," face that side to the field in the second quarter. Do the same for "Q-4" in the final quarter.
"I've seen it obviously because I live in Berkeley (Calif.)," said Okinaga, a 1987 UH graduate who went to McKinley High. "Apparently at Cal they do it a lot."
Okinaga contacted Miyashiro, a 1975 UH graduate who went to Kaimuki High, and the two have put the cards together, with the help of others. Getting the cards printed and put together took three days.
"Mia had blown up a picture of the Superdome itself," Miyashiro said. "We had two girls with a magnifying glass counting each seat so we can get the total number of boards prepared."
