Big Island drunken driving arrests are up

Advertiser Staff

Drunken driving arrests are up and major traffic accidents are down on the Big Island, according to Hawai'i County police.

As of Dec. 24, county police made 1,373 arrests for driving under the influence; that's up about 9 percent over the same period last year, police said.

Meanwhile, major accidents have declined about 13 percent, they said. Police said there have been 2,113 major accidents so far this year, compared to 2,415 during the same period last year.

Fatalities are on the rise, however. Thirty-seven people have died in traffic accidents on the Big Island so far this year. That compares with 33 deaths during the same period last year.
