Waimalu school gets nearly $3M to expand library

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle has released $2,936,000 in design and construction funds to expand the library at Waimalu Elementary School in 'Aiea.

"This is one of several projects the state has undertaken to improve our public school libraries, which are an important gateway for students into subjects such as history, science and the arts," Lingle said in a written statement. "This project will establish a better environment for Waimalu Elementary School students to explore different books and develop critical computer skills."

Waimalu Elementary's library was built in 1959 and, at 3,888 square feet, is about 35 percent smaller than what Department of Education guidelines suggest for a school of its size. The project will expand the library and improve its electrical system to support the library's computers and educational technology needs.

The total project cost is estimated at $3,783,000, of which $847,000 was allotted in 2006. Design is ongoing and scheduled to be completed in July 2008. Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2008 and be completed in October 2009.
