Volunteers to offer free tax preparation assistance

Advertiser Staff

Starting in January, the State Department of Taxation will no longer assist in the preparation of individual income tax returns at all district offices, including the neighbor islands.

However, the Department announces that beginning Jan. 2 through Jan. 25 volunteers recruited and coordinated by Aloha United Way's Family and Individual Self-Sufficiency Program as well as members of AARP will assist taxpayers in completing their 2007 Form N-13 (Individual Income Tax Return Resident Short Form).

The volunteers will be available at 830 Punchbowl Street from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday (except Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Day). Taxpayers will be provided order-of-service numbers on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors should enter through the main doors on Punchbowl Street, where they will be required to present a photo ID and sign in with security personnel.

Beginning Feb. 1 through April 20,, volunteers will be available at free tax assistance sites across the state to prepare both federal and state returns. The Department of Taxation will continue to provide in-person counter service and phone information service to answer questions and provide information and other services to taxpayers. Forms and printed information on various tax topics are available by phone or fax request, in person at any district tax office, and via the Internet at www.hawaii.gov/tax.
