Missed programs? See them on KLIFE

By Jeff Chung

Earlier this month, KBS America made an unprecedented move by revamping the programming schedule, skipping episodes of series to bring the U.S. K-drama TV schedule more up to date with that of South Korea. The fans in the long run will enjoy fresh programming versus older material. The short-term problem was that there were many episodes of series that people followed week to week that were not seen here, confusing fans who missed pieces of the story lines.

Fans have e-mailed me by the hundreds in frustration, anger and the desire for an explanation. I would like to thank everyone for their patience and to assure them that KBS America was very responsive to the needs expressed in their e-mails and other feedback and to providing the missing episodes.

Favorite shows that were missed during the schedule change on KBS America channel 80 are now available on channel 81 KLIFE. The most popular and demanded programming is available on demand at no charge: "Daughters In Law," episodes 13-30; "Sunok," episodes 146-150 (including the ending episode); "Dae Jo Young," episodes 117-122; "Six Martyred Ministers," episodes 21-24 (including the ending episode). You can watch when you want as many times as you want — pause, stop, rewind, fast-forward — and while you watch these shows, there are no commercials! The programs all have English subtitles as well. These will remain available until the end of January.

To watch your missing episode on KLIFE channel 81, you will have to follow some guidelines, as video on demand is different from scheduled programming. Go to channel 81, a digital channel (if you have been watching channel 80 normally, you will be able to get 81). The screen may take a few seconds to load, so please be patient. Once the menu appears, you will see four categories; Music Videos, Drama, Movies, Specials. Using the directional keys on your cable remote control, select the Specials category, which will then give you options on various titles. Find the title and episode you want to watch, once again using the arrows on your remote. Once you've found the episode you want to view, press the "B" (buy) button on your remote. Don't worry; you will not be charged for watching the programs in the Specials category even if you are pressing the "buy" button. Your program will start in a few seconds.

KLIFE is the first Korean content video-on-demand channel (similar to pay-per-view) in the U.S. The channel was launched in May of this year on Oceanic Cable digital channel 81. KLIFE offers a variety of options: free music and videos; Korean dramas you can watch per episode (for a fee); and specials — mostly cultural programming. All of the content is either English-subtitled or dubbed into English. The great option with KLIFE is that there are no commercials and you can watch at your own leisure. Most of the top contemporary Korean movies and past hallyu dramas are available on KLIFE.

Trying to program the missing episodes into the existing and already-busy channel 80 schedule would have been a nightmare, and many would have missed the shows, resulting in additional confusion, so KLIFE offered a great alternative. Again, thank you to the hundreds and hundreds of fans who e-mailed me with feedback.

Happy New Year! (She Heh Bok Man-he Badu-seyo!)
