Flash flood warning for Molokai, rain to linger

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Moloka'i until 11:30 a.m. today and a flash flood watch for Maui and the Big Island until 6 p.m. tonight.

A flash flood warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads and low-lying areas and people should immediately move to higher ground and not try to cross fast flowing water, even by vehicle.

Nearly stationary heavy rain fell at a rate of over 2 inches per hour over eastern Moloka'i, according to the weather service. A gage on Halawa Stream in eastern Moloka'i this morning showed "a rapid rise" in water level above eight feet from heavy rainfall.

The weather service said that the heavy rains should linger today over the Islands and the most unstable areas are Maui County and most of the Big Island.

A small craft advisory also remains in effect for Hawaiian coastal waters within 40 miles, including the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Boaters should expect erratic and gusty winds and lightning near thunderstorms.
