Cheering on our team great way to start '08

StoryChat: Comment on this story

Hawai'i residents might argue from now until the New Year over which events to place on the Happiest Stories of 2007 list, but it's hard to imagine someone disputing which one deserves the No. 1 spot.

The triumph of the University of Hawai'i football Warriors gets that distinction. And for anyone who might have been a cave-dweller for the past month, here's why:

  • UH may have had a comparatively easy game schedule, but no team gets to the top of the heap without skill, hard work and sheer guts. The Warriors have all the above.

  • Players exhibited the ultimate in team spirit. No swaggering in sight.

  • After a season with some some rough spots, the fans heeded the pleas of Coach June Jones and behaved with aloha toward the visiting Boise State team. Goodwill has been in abundance ever since — and must be sustained before the Georgia fans and a national TV audience.

  • As a bonus, traveling fans have a chance to enjoy New Orleans and help the economy of a city that needs every boost it can get.

  • Most importantly, the pre-game excitement has helped us forget for a time all the battles of 2007 that have divided us — transit, Superferry — and enjoy the bonds of pride.

Look at the signs on cars, in shop windows. Unity feels good, and so does cheering on the team.

    Go Warriors!
