Serious wipeout likely killed surfer

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Surfer Robert Martin, 23, of Ha'ena, died after he was found unconscious on Wainiha Beach following a report by a bystander who saw a surfer crash in nearby waves.

A 911 call was received at 6 p.m. Tuesday, in which the caller reported seeing a serious "wipe-out" at Wainiha Beach.

Fire officials said they responded to a report of a man found washed up on the shore. Emergency personnel performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but Martin was pronounced dead on arrival at Wilcox Hospital Tuesday night.


ROBBER OF KALIHI BANK AT LARGE

Central Pacific Bank's Kalihi branch was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash Wednesday by a man who used a demand note.

The robbery at 2119 N. King St. near the intersection of Gulick Avenue was reported at 11:46 a.m. Police said the branch has been robbed several times in the past six months.

No weapon was seen in the robbery and police had made no arrest as of last night.


RELATIVE ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT

A 48-year-old Kalihi man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of 12 counts of first-degree sexual assault and 12 counts of third-degree sexual assault.

Police said the complaint was filed on behalf of a teenage girl who reported being assaulted by a family member first in 1999, while she was still in elementary school.

The girl reported that the assaults continued until Friday, police said.


MAN CHARGED IN ATTACK ON GIRL

A 21-year-old man was charged Tuesday with multiple sex assault counts stemming from the alleged attack on a juvenile girl Saturday.

William Donta Fuller, who has no permanent local address, made an appearance at District Court Wednesday and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Friday.

Fuller is charged with three counts each of first- and third-degree sex assault, and kidnapping. He is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.

A second suspect, 20, is still at large.


SERGEANT BECOMES SHOPO CHAIRMAN

Honolulu police Sgt. Stan Aquino is the new O'ahu Chapter chairman of the State of Hawai'i Organization of Police Officers.

Aquino succeeds Detective Alex Garcia, who resigned, according to Tenari Maafala, president of SHOPO's state board of directors.

Other O'ahu Chapter officers are Lt. Bertram Angut, vice chairman; Officer Roy Fuata, secretary; and Detective Eric Iinuma, treasurer.


WAIKIKI BURGLARY SUSPECT ARRESTED

A 45-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of breaking into a home on Poni Mo'i Road in Waikiki.

Police said a man, 37, visiting from the Mainland and renting the home, caught the suspect coming out of the residence at 6:15 p.m. A security guard, who witnessed the alleged break-in, had called police.

The suspect was booked for investigation of first-degree burglary.


19-YEAR-OLD HELD IN ATTACK ON DAD

A 19-year-old 'Ewa Beach man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly assaulted his father.

Police said the father, 45, told them he was arguing with his son about 5:30 p.m., when the son attacked him.

The father was taken to Hawaii Medical Center West for treatment and the son was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault, police said.

Hawaii Medical Center West is the new name of the former St. Francis Medical Center West.


TWO ARRESTED AFTER TRAFFIC STOP

Charges were pending against two men, ages 37 and 25, arrested for firearm and drug offenses Tuesday following an early morning traffic stop at 700 Ke'eaumoku St.

The men were arrested at 4:30 a.m. for third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, two firearm offenses and unauthorized possession of confidential information.
