It took a while for the Mililani boys basketball team to get going offensively Wednesday night, but once it did, Campbell had no chance.

Scott Burns scored 19 points and Nick Kanno added 11, and Mililani used a 10-1 run to start the third period to beat Campbell, 62-46, at McKinley.

The Trojans, ranked No. 5 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, improved to 11-0 and claimed its second consecutive O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West title.

"The kids from the beginning of the year they set a goal to win the West," Mililani coach Hiram Akina said. "The competition was tough, we all knew that. These kids are great to be around. They love competing."

Mililani's run to open the second half gave it a 31-18 advantage with 5:50 remaining. Jonathan Keen scored seven points and Donovan Olmos added a 3-pointer during the spurt.

"We didn't talk about the offensive side, we just talked about defense," Burns said. "That is our main concern, play defense and we'll get good shots on offense."

Mililani's largest lead was 59-39 after two free throws by Jordan Torres with 1:03 remaining.

"It wasn't one of our better nights," Campbell coach Bob Samson said. "Nothing went right for us. They had everything to do with it. They played well."

The Trojans spent the entire game in a 1-3-1 zone, and forced No. 9 Campbell into 17-of-57 shooting from the field and 14 turnovers.

"Right now it's working for us," Akina said of the 1-3-1. "I believe we're a really good man-to-man team. We were going to do that tonight. But we came out here and they weren't making shots. Their rhythm was off. They looked at the 1-3-1, they didn't attack it."

Mililani was 6 of 15 from 3-point range, including two apiece by Burns and Kanno. Campbell (8-3) was just 2 of 20.

In the first half, Mililani was 7 of 25 from the field. In the second, it was 15 of 25, including 9 of 11 to start the third period.

"The passing is good," Akina said. "Our team chemistry right now is really good. The guys know that, so they know how to play together. They trust each other."

Jayden DeLizo scored 10 points for Campbell, which fell into a tie for second in the OIA West with Radford.
