HECO restores power to about 6,200 O'ahu customers

Advertiser Staff

Power has been restored to about 6,200 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers who lost service at about 12:25 a.m. on Friday.

Peter Rosegg, a spokesman for the utility company, said about 2,300 customers in Kane'ohe, 2,400 in the Waiau area and 1,500 in Moanalua lost power for about 10 minutes.

The loss of power might have been the result of what's called "automatic load shedding," a process in which computers shut down service to certain areas to prevent damage to the company's power generation or distribution system.

"We're not sure at this point what caused the problem, but we're looking into it," Rosegg said.
