HONOLULU (February 2, 2007) The Hawaii Psychological Association (HPA) beat out 60 states, provinces and territories to win the American Psychological Association's (APA) 2006 Diversity Award for outstanding accomplishments in diversity programming. APA's Division 31 selected HPA in recognition of its accomplishments in promoting innovative, creative and significant activities related to diversity in membership, governance and programming.
The ongoing leadership of HPA's Diversity Committee chairs – June Ching, Ph.D. (2003), Karuna Joshi-Peters, Ph.D. (2004-05), and Claudette Ozoa, Ph.D. (2006) – was specifically cited as noteworthy. The chairs have been dedicated to sponsoring workshops and developing events that enhance multi-cultural competencies and awareness, along with increasing representation of diverse groups in the membership and governance of the association.
Chartered in 1962, the Hawai`i Psychological Association is the professional association representing over 300 Hawai`i psychologists. Its mission is to advance the science and practice of psychology while supporting excellence in education, training, research, advocacy and service. HPA works to inform the public and the Legislature about psychology to ensure that quality health services, both public and private, are available to the diverse people of Hawai`i.
