Warning signs posted following Pauoa sewage spill

Advertiser Staff

City crews reported a sewage spill of about 3,150 gallons in Pauoa Thursday night from a broken pipe hanging from a bridge near Olomana Lane.

Warning signs advising people to stay out of the stream below were posted Friday at dawn, according to city environmental spokesman Ken Kawahara. The state Health Department was notified and water samples taken.

Crews from the Department of Environmental Services responded to a report Thursday night of a 6-inch cast-iron pipe that buckled because of corrosion of the metal hangers holding it up, he said.

Kawahara said crews completed repairs about 9:30 p.m. and replaced the broken section with new a PVC pipe with stainless steel hangers.
