UH women's water polo team turns back San Jose State, 11-9

Lisa van Raalte scored four goals and Kelly Mason added three to lift Hawai'i to an 11-9 victory over San Jose State Thursday in a women's water polo match at San Jose, Calif.
Hawai'i, ranked No. 5 in the nation, is 1-0 overall and in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. No. 11 San Jose State is 1-1 and 0-1.
Emily Cox, Anna Sieprath, Kristy Bagnall and Angela Turnbull each scored a goal for the Rainbow Wahine.
The game was tied at 9 entering the final quarter. Mason and Cox scored in the final 2:08 to seal the victory.
Hawai'i travels to No. 3 Stanford Friday.
BASKETBALL
CU'S WHITING A FINALIST
Chaminade senior Zack Whiting was named one of 17 finalists Thursday for the Bob Cousy Award given to the nation's top point guard.
Whiting, who is 6 feet 4 and 205 pounds, is one of two Division II players among the finalists, which includes 13 Division I players. Two Division III players also are finalists.
Whiting, of Chico, Calif., is averaging more than 20 points per game this season.
A committee comprised of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America selected the finalists.
The winner will be chosen by a committee, including Cousy. The public also will get to vote at www.cousyaward.com.
The winner will be announced at the Final Four on April 2.
TENNIS
LAM RISES TO NO. 657
Chris Lam's huge start in 2007 raised his world ranking 64 spots, to No. 657, in the latest rankings.
Lam, who was home-schooled in Kaimuki, beat No. 289 Todd Widom in his first tournament this year. Last week at the Waikoloa Challenger, Lam upset No. 175 Sam Warburg.
Lam's world ranking is a career-best, as is his standing as the 58th-ranked American. He is ranked 684th in doubles, No. 62 among Americans.
Lam plans to play seven tournaments in Australia and New Zealand in February and March. The first is the MST ATP Challenger International, starting Monday in Tasmania.
