Rainbow Warriors lose heartbreaker at Nevada, 69-68

RENO, Nev. — The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team came up agonizingly — and controversially — short in a 69-68 loss to No. 15 Nevada today.

Ahmet Gueye's fall-away shot with 5.8 seconds remaining went through the hoop and would have put the Rainbow Warriors ahead 70-69. It was initially counted as good but later discounted after a lengthy discussion by the referees.

"I have no clue; I don't know what happened, why they changed the call," Gueye said. "I'm extremely disappointed."

Hawai'i retained final possession of the ball, but a shot by Matt Gibson was partially blocked, then Gueye grabbed the ball and put up a shot that missed off the backboard. A putback attempt by P.J. Owsley went in, but it came a split-second after the final horn sounded.

"I think they're right all the way," Hawai'i head coach Riley Wallace said of the final calls. "It's just how it happened that makes it bizarre."

The 'Bows dropped to 13-10 overall and 4-6 in the Western Athletic Conference. Hawai'i has never defeated the Wolf Pack in Reno in 10 tries.

Nevada improved to 21-2 and 9-1.

Gueye matched WAC Player of the Year Nick Fazekas throughout the game. Both finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Marcelus Kemp scored a game-high 23 points, including 16 in the second half to lead Nevada.

Matt Lojeski added 13 points and seven assists, Gibson had 11 points and seven assists, and Owsley scored 10 points for the 'Bows.

A 9-0 run by Nevada put the Wolf Pack ahead, 25-15, with 9:31 remaining in the first half.

The 'Bows rallied to tie the score at 31 with 4:53 remaining, but the Wolf Pack closed the half with a 9-2 surge to take a 40-33 lead at intermission.

The 40 points was the most scored against Hawai'i in a first half this season. Against Fresno State on Thursday, the 'Bows allowed the Bulldogs to score just 42 points for the entire game.

Fazekas scored 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting and grabbed six rebounds in the first half. Gueye nearly matched him, getting 11 points and seven rebounds in the first half.

Nevada increased the lead back to 10 early in the first half, but the 'Bows rallied to tie it at 59 on a jump shot by Matt Gibson with 7:38 remaining.

The Wolf Pack took a 65-61 lead with 3:43 remaining on two free throws by Fazekas before Hawai'i made its final charge at the upset attempt.
