NFL all-star game sold out for 28th consecutive year

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The Pro Bowl is a sellout for the 28th consecutive year in Honolulu.

The NFL postseason all-star game, which has been played here since 1980, has been a sellout at 50,000-seat Aloha Stadium every year, according to the NFL.

This year's game will be played Saturday, Feb. 10. Kickoff is 1 p.m. CBS will broadcast the game live.

The Pro Bowl teams — 42 players each for the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference — are voted on by fans, players and coaches.

Each group's vote counts one-third toward determining the rosters.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning received 1,183,468 votes to lead in fan balloting.

Two players with Hawai'i ties are scheduled to play in the Pro Bowl: Chicago Bears center Olin Kreutz (Saint Louis School) and Dallas Cowboys punter Mat McBriar (University of Hawai'i).

Players on the winning team will each receive $40,000 (coaches get $15,000), while losing team members each receive $20,000 (coaches get $10,000).

The NFL said yesterday it has no plans of playing the Pro Bowl in another city next year or in 2009 despite a provision in its contract with Hawai'i that allows for the league to do so.

"At this point, there's no plans to do that," Michael Humphrey, the NFL's event director at the Pro Bowl, said yesterday. "It's not something we're pursuing at this point."

The state's contract with the NFL runs through the 2009 game. If the NFL does decide to play the game in another city in 2008 or 2009, Honolulu will host the game in 2010, according to the contract.

There has been speculation the game could be played in China, which is hosting the NFL's China Bowl next year.
