Humpback Whale watching and more

Here are some events in connection with Humpback Whale Awareness Month.

Feb. 7: Diamond Head Whale Watching, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; bring a brown-bag lunch and binoculars and learn how to spot whales. Meet at the Diamond Head scenic lookout (second pull-off after the lighthouse when driving from Waikiki); call for reservations.

Feb. 10: Lego Robot Workshop for teachers of grades 3-8, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., free, O'ahu Sanctuary Office, 6600 Kalaniana'ole Highway, Suite 301, Hawai'i Kai. Build a remote-controlled underwater vehicle and learn about the science of underwater forces; teachers can borrow Lego kits for classrooms. Co-sponsored by University of Hawai'i Science Outreach Program. Limited to 20 teachers; for reservations, call 397-2651, ext. 252, or e-mail Christine.Brammer@noaa.gov.

Feb. 10: O'ahu Whale Watching, any time between 8:30 and 11 a.m.; sites include Diamond Head scenic lookout, Lana'i Lookout near Hanauma Bay, Halona Blowhole, Makapu'u Point Lighthouse (requires novice-level hike). Bring snack, sunscreen and binoculars to learn how to spot whales.

Feb. 16: Halona Blowhole Whale Watching, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; call for reservations.

Feb. 17: Ocean Day, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Waikiki Aquarium. Family activities to learn about Hawai'i's ocean resources; fee. Co-sponsored by Outrigger Hotels & Resorts; call for reservations.

Feb. 21: Diamond Head Whale Watching, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; call for reservations.

Feb. 21: Kaua'i Ocean Count Volunteer Training and Whale Lecture, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Lihu'e Public Library. Mandatory training on data collection and whale behavior identification for site leaders and volunteers participating in the Sanctuary Ocean Count. Contact Jean Souza at (808) 246-2860.

Feb. 22: Humpback Whale Lecture, noon-1 p.m., 'Iolani Palace. Christine Brammer, O'ahu programs coordinator for the whale sanctuary, will discuss the sanctuary and humpback whales. Co-sponsored by 'Iolani Palace.

Feb. 24: Ocean Count, 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; count humpback whales and record their behaviors from various sites on O'ahu, Kaua'i and the Big Island. Contact 397-2651, ext. 253, on O'ahu; (808) 246-2860 on Kaua'i; (888) 55WHALE, ext. 253, on the Big Island.
