Kapolei sophomore forward Chelsea Swann scored with about a minute left in the second overtime to lift Kapolei to its first O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship.

Kapolei defeated Pearl City, 1-0, yesterday at Kapolei High School, and avoided going into a third straight session of penalty kicks.

"The (assistant) referee came over and asked me for my penalty kicks lineup and I refused to give it to her," Kapolei coach Brian Beck said. "Because we were going to win it right then."

The Hurricanes won in penalty kicks in the semifinals against Mililani and the quarterfinals against Kaiser.

"We were really nervous, because we knew Pearl City watched us in our penalty kicks against Mililani," Kapolei captain Chyanne Alejado. "(Coach) Beck said he knew we could do it in overtime."

Kapolei (11-2-3), Pearl City (11-2-2), Kalani, Mililani, Kaiser and Moanalua all advanced to this week's state tournament, which runs from Wednesday through Saturday.

Swann scored on an assist from freshman midfielder Kristina Behrens, who battled with a Pearl City defender and won the ball in the 18-yard box before sending the ball to the back post. The Pearl City goalkeeper knocked the ball up in the air, but the ball went right to Swann, who volleyed the ball into the goal.

"I thought the goalkeeper was going to get the ball," Swann said. "But then she didn't, and I thought, 'This is it.' I was so happy.

"It feels good. I had to do it for the seniors."

Through 80 minutes of regulation and most of the overtime played, the teams traded momentum.

"They're just warriors," Beck said of the Hurricanes. "They battled back and forth. They deserved to get an overtime goal."

For the most part, a quick Pearl City team exploited the space behind the Kapolei defense with through balls on the ground, while Kapolei found success with junior defender Chaney Lopez taking the ball up the field herself and passing to her teammates.

The Hurricanes' best chance was on a 30-yard free kick by sophomore forward Liana Gualdarama, but the ball hit the left goalpost.

"We had shots and I thought we had more opportunities," Pearl City coach Frank Baumholtz said. "It's the way the game goes."
