Advertiser Staff

Jason Salmeri is leaving the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team to become a New Jersey state trooper.

Salmeri, a former UH middle blocker, has served as an assistant coach for the past two seasons.

He said he originally applied for the state trooper job in 2005 and recently was notified of his acceptance into the police academy.

He will train for six months before officially becoming a trooper.

UH coach Mike Wilton said there are no immediate plans to fill the position.
