Two events focusing on how we communicate in the modern world are scheduled:

  • It's a brave new (communications) world: Whether it's PDAs, podcasting, Nanos, smartphones, blogging, RSS feeds, wikis or text messaging, learn about how to turn today's technology to your advantage at a discussion sponsored by the International Association of Business Communicators' local chapter. Dolly Sampson, a veteran presenter on current and future technology, will share today's available technology — and some of the advantages and disadvantages of each for communication professionals, in the speech "A Perfect Match: Technology + Communications — Taking Advantage of this Powerful Coupling." Samson is board chair and past president of the Hawaii Telecommunications Association and a computer science professor at Hawai'i Pacific University.   • Don Thorsen, an almost 30-year veteran in voice communications, will speak on "Unified Communications" — including presence communications, instant messaging, collaboration tools and integration with MS Office Communicator — at the upcoming luncheon meeting of the ASSOCIATION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROFESSIONALS. Thorsen is channel manager for Mitel, which has a 33-year communications history, serving more than 22 million users in more than 90 countries.   • The Small Business Administration is taking its SBA RESOURCE DAYS — free, confidential, half-hour consultations with SBA business-development specialists — this month to a number of its participating lenders and resources partners statewide. The workshop will offer networking opportunities with other business owners, an interactive in-depth business development discussion and question-and-answer session. Free.   • "COMPUTERS FOR SENIORS: Windows XP and Intro to MS Word," sponsored by the Office of Continuing and Community Education, Windward Community College, will be offered 9 a.m.-noon Wednesdays, this week through Feb. 21 in Hale Kuhina, Room 114. Participants will be offered an introduction to the Windows XP operating system, word processing using MS Word and keyboard shortcuts.   • Two words that can grow your business sales — and seven steps to fiscal fitness — will be among workshop topics discussed as part of an NFL-sponsored PRO BOWL BUSINESS WORKSHOP. The National Football League, Kapi'olani Community College and the Hawai'i Small Business Development Center Network will offer the Practical Tools to Drive Performance and Growth for Small Business workshop, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday at the Hale Koa Hotel, Fort DeRussy Room. The one-day session is intended for small-business owners, with sessions covering increasing company sales, the concept of ratio analysis, strategic options creating a realistic action plan and tools to identify and manage key profit and cash flow drivers.   • Long-term healthcare will be one topic of discussion at a combined meeting Thursday of The American Business Women's Association's Ulupono and 'Imua chapters. Gerry Abbey and Lori Casey will be speaking on "Making the Right Choice" and "At the Doorstep of Change: Women of Financial Empowerment."   • Applications for a leadership training program for executive directors of community nonprofit organizations are being accepted through March 30. The program, PONO (Promoting Outstanding Nonprofit Organizations), is sponsored by the Hawaii Community Foundation, in collaboration with the Case Foundation. The program offers a peer-centered leadership training curriculum for midcareer nonprofit executive directors. Participants meet in six one-day training sessions over the year, each focusing on different aspects of leadership in the nonprofit context.
