A good first impression is key when new boss arrives

Q. I've recently had a new boss transfer into my department. Before the transfer, I had a very good relationship with my previous boss; our friendly relationship made going to work a pleasure. What are some things that I can do to start a good relationship with my new boss?

A. There are numerous things you can do to build rapport with your new boss. It is important to stay positive and be enthusiastic. It is also important to recognize your nonverbal communication. Many times people might be positive but send conflicting messages through their nonverbal communication. Here are some tips that can help ensure that you are projecting positive nonverbal communication.

1. Maintain eye contact when speaking or listening. Eye contact shows that you are interested when listening and confident when speaking. Not giving eye contact can project insecurity and dishonesty.

2. Be relaxed and open. Relax your arms and keep them uncrossed. Crossing your arms makes you come across as closed off and protective. By uncrossing your arms you will appear open and easier to talk to.

3. Nod in agreement. By nodding in agreement, you show that you are listening and, more importantly, giving positive nonverbal feedback.

4. Take notes. Taking notes is another way to provide positive feedback and show that you care about what they are saying.

5. Lean closer. A slight lean toward your boss shows that you're involved and interested in what they are saying.

6. Maintain relaxed posture. Always maintain good posture — without looking stiff. Relax your posture; you will look calm and confident.
