Library system reduces vacancies markedly

Twenty-two librarian positions are unfilled in the Hawai'i State Public Library System, a dramatic improvement from three years ago.There were 135 vacancies in the system in 2004.
A total of 43 people are being recruited to fill the current vacancies.
The state's libraries currently have a total of 583 positions.
Since April 2003, when libraries throughout the state trimmed hours and some closed down service for entire days, 299 vacancies have been filled, according to the latest report to the Board of Education by State Librarian Jo Ann Schindler.
