Free tax help available for select residents

Advertiser Staff

Free tax assistance for low- to moderate-income taxpayers is available through March at Leeward Community College.

Students and community members with the program at LCC and the University of Hawai'i West O'ahu are trained and certified to prepare basic tax returns. The free service does not include tax return preparation for those who are self-employed or who receive rental income.

The free service is available every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (doors will close at 12 noon) on a first-come-first-served basis in Room BE-229, Business Education Building of the Leeward Community College campus, diamondhead side of the LCC Library.

Those seeking the free service must bring the following items:

  • Photo identification

  • Social Security cards for taxpayer/spouse/dependents

  • Wage and earning statements (Forms W-2, W-2G, 1099-R from all employers)

  • Interest and dividend statements (Form 1099)

  • Copy of last year's federal and state returns (2005) if available

  • Bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit (optional)

  • Any other relevant information on income and expenses, including total paid for daycare, daycare provider's identifying number, and other amounts for itemized deductions.

Taxes can be filed electronically. Those with married joint tax returns can also file electronically but both spouses need to be present to sign the required forms.

For more information about this free service, contact Roy Kamida at kamida@hawaii.edu or 455-0348.
