DIVISION II
HPA makes return to state tourney

Hawai'i Prep, the top-seed in the Division II tournament, is also one of the few Division II teams with state experience.

But although Ka Makani coach Steve Perry is familiar with playing in the postseason, most of his players aren't.

"We haven't been there in two years," Perry said. "Most of the leaders on the team haven't played in the postseason.

They definitely wanted to get back (to the state tournament). We missed out by a game the last two years."

Second-seeded Pac-Five and third-seeded Campbell have never played in a state tournament. Fourth-seeded Kapa'a played in the state championship game — but nearly a decade ago (1998).

The BIIF, ILH and MIL teams play an all-divisions schedule, meaning they have a chance to play Division I teams week in and week out.

"It's a big help, of course," Perry said.

Hawai'i Prep is led by a trio of senior defenders in Tamlyn Tsubota, Kela Fitzgerald and Rebekah Chmura and midfielder Charnelle Terawaki.

Pac-Five is led offensively by Jenna Matsumoto and Janelle Toner, who have two goals each. The Wolfpack tied Division I Punahou in their second to the last game of the season.

Campbell junior midfielder Christiana Alcosiba scored seven goals this season to pace the Sabers.

Kapa'a outlasted Kaua'i, 4-3, to claim the KIF title Wednesday, with two goals by Jocelyn Enrique and one each by Brittney Carvalho and Leila Barnett.
