Mayor praises students on 'signing day'

Advertiser Staff

This morning Mayor Mufi Hannemann praised the 43 high school seniors who signed letters of Intent to play college football, part of National Signing Day in which high school athletes all over the country make commitments to colleges of their choice.

In return, the colleges offer scholarships that generally provide a full ride for the athlete, and are renewable each year.

The athletes and their families gathered at Kapolei Hale before 7 a.m. for a mass signing ceremony complete with grandmothers snapping pictures and mothers dabbing away happy tears.

Hannemann said these young Hawai'i athletes have been "graded an A in the first quarter of their lives."

He also said that they have strived for what all young people should — a college education. And he said it's likely they wouldn't be here today if not for loving and supportive families.
