Advertiser Staff

Writer-instructor Tom Peek will lead Volcano Art Center's ninth annual Weekend Writer's Retreat, which begins at 5 p.m. on Feb. 23 and ends at 3 p.m. on Feb. 25.

"Writing for Power, Heart & Vision" is open to 14 creative writers, any genre and experience level will be accepted. Peek will guide them through writing exercises and discussion of the writing process. He emphasizes training writers to see detail, pouring emotion onto the page, and tapping into the imagination.

Peek has taught writing workshops since 1991, through University of Hawai'i at Hilo, Lana'i Center for Culture and Arts, and Volcano Art Center. His own writing includes book-length university publications, late-night radio comedy, articles for newspapers such as Hawaii Island Journal, public policy studies, and video scripts. He also served as the primary writer on the core design team for the Kilauea Visitor Center exhibits at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, which were unveiled in 2005.

Cost is $225 and includes six catered meals. Educational subsidies are available for financially needy students. The retreat is held at Volcano Village's oldest bed and breakfast, with optional housing in private rooms (with shared bath) available for an additional fee of $130. To register or apply for financial aid, call Volcano Art Center at (808) 967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.
