Learn to compost at the Green House in Pauoa Feb. 17

Don't bag up all your biodegradables in plastic only to moulder in a landfill. Learn how to turn your "Garbage into Gold" in

Evelyn Giddings' hands-on workshop in how to build and harvest a compost pile, from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 17 at the Green House. The longtime organic gardener, known as The Queen of Composting, will also cover how to sprout sunflower seeds, which are a wonderful source of nutrition. The course includes a detailed booklet of composting methods and information. Fee: $15.

The same day, the Green House will also host "Edible Landscaping," a workshop on growing vegetables, herbs and fruits instead of grass, a weed that needs to be fed, watered and cut. Discover the joys of having an edible landscape that will sustain you and your family with benefits that go beyond good food. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Fee: $15.
