Lifeguards posted warning signs at Waimea Bay yesterday as 20-foot waves created rough conditions along the North Shore.

A weak cold front is expected to reach the state today, cutting off trade winds and bringing intermittent showers.

Once the system passes, forecasters expect a brief period of cool weather, with nighttime temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s, before trade winds return early next week.

National Weather Service meteorologist Vladimir Ryshko said there is a "fair amount of cloudiness" behind the system, which means scattered showers and the chance of intermittent heavy rains will stick around statewide through the weekend.

As far as surf goes, forecasters expect a large northwest swell to come in tomorrow. A swell also came in yesterday, creating rough, choppy conditions on the North Shore.

An Ocean Safety dispatcher said there were no rescues yesterday, probably because few people went into the waves.

A high-surf advisory remains in effect through Friday afternoon for O'ahu, Maui, Kaua'i and Ni'ihau.

Forecasters said wave faces on the North Shore were as high as 20 feet yesterday. Waves are forecast to decrease today to between 14 and 18 feet, then build back up to 25 feet on the North Shore by tomorrow morning.
