Three home to play in UH softball event

It will be homecoming for three softball players this weekend.

Nebraska sophomore infielder Kimberly Fuller (Roosevelt 2005), and Portland State outfielders Kimi Daniel (Sacred Hearts '03) and Jessica Maielua (Lahainaluna '05) will be at the University of Hawai'i's Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic tournament.

The five-team tournament runs tomorrow through Sunday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Fuller's brother Aaron (Kamehameha '02) plays baseball at NAIA Graceland in Lamoni, Iowa.

BASEBALL

  • Cal Poly's Derrick Saito (Baldwin '05) pitched five scoreless innings of no-hit ball with 10 strikeouts and no walks in a 6-4 loss to Southern California Jan. 30.

  • Cal State Northridge second baseman Jonathan Sakurai ('Aiea '03) batted 4 for 6 with two runs and two steals in an 11-7 win against Pacific Friday. He is batting .370 after six games.

  • Division II Abilene Christian's Jared-James Pacheco (Saint Anthony '04) doubled home the winning run in a 3-2 win against Henderson State in the second game to complete a doubleheader sweep Feb. 2.

  • NAIA Concordia (Irvine, Calif.) infielder Keoni Ruth (Kamehameha '03) batted 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs in a 10-9 win against Cal Poly Pomona Feb. 1.

    MEN'S GOLF

  • Oregon senior Matt Ma ('Iolani '02 of 'Aiea) returns to Hawai'i for the UH Hilo Invitational, to be played today through Friday at the par-72, 6,791-yard Waikoloa Village Golf Club.

    Ma averages 74.0 strokes per round (15 rounds in five tournaments).

    MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • Stanford freshman setter Kawika Shoji ('Iolani '06) helped the Cardinal to their first win of the season, totalling 61 assists, 13 digs, three aces and four blocks in a 30-26, 30-27, 19-30, 26-30, 15-11 win over UC San Diego Saturday.

    UCSD freshman outside hitter Will Ehrman (Punahou '06) had 17 kills and nine digs.

    GYMNASTICS

  • California-Berkeley senior Elyse Wong (Punahou '03) scored a career-high 9.275 on the bars and a season-high of 9.725 on the floor, but the Golden Bears lost to No. 5 Stanford, 196.075-189.925, Sunday.

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Colorado School of Mines sophomore guard Kyle Pape ('Iolani '05) had 17 points and four assists in an 88-75 win over UC-Colorado Springs Friday. The following night, Pape scored 22 points in a 71-49 win against Regis.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Menlo (Atherton, Calif.) sophomore guard Kelci Fushikoshi (Lahainaluna '05) was named the Cal-Pac Player of the Week for the first time.

    Fushikoshi averaged 11.3 points in three games. She scored 13 in a 68-41 win over Cal State East Bay Jan. 30, 14 in a 64-41 win over Bethany Feb. 1 and seven in a 61-46 win over Cal State Maritime Saturday.

    Menlo junior guard Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04 of Honolulu) recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds against Cal State East Bay. CSEB was led by junior guard Bre Carson (McKinley '04), who tied for the team lead with nine points.

  • Gonzaga junior guard Rachel Kane (Punahou '03) had nine points, three rebounds and three assists in a 66-56 win over Loyola Marymount Saturday.

  • Saint Francis (Pa.) senior guard Christie Ayers (Pearl City '03) scored a team-high 13 points, with four rebounds and two steals, in a 77-59 loss to Monmouth Sunday.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • New Mexico freshman midfielder Markee Nobriga (Kamehameha '06) and San Diego State sophomore midfielder Mariko Strickland (Mid-Pacific '05) were named to the Mountain West Conference Fall All-Academic team.

    Nobriga earned a 3.46 GPA in dental hygiene and Strickland a 3.93 GPA in kinesiology.

    WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • UNLV senior libero Kristin Koochi (Iolani '03 of Honolulu) and Utah sophomore defensive specialist Lacey Lavarias (Iolani '04 of Waialua) were named to the Mountain West Conference Fall All-Academic team.

    Koochi earned a 3.26 GPA in kinesiological sciences and Lavarias a 3.87 GPA in Parks, Rec., and tourism.

    HALL OF FAME

  • Former Loyola Marymount baseball players Carl Fraticelli and Kalani Bush, members of the 1986 College World Series baseball team, were inducted into the LMU Athletics' Hall of Fame Class of 2007.

    Both are Kalaheo alums.

    The '86 Loyola Marymount team finished the season ranked No. 6 in the nation in both the Baseball America and ESPN/Collegiate Baseball polls. Fraticelli was a second-team all-West Coast Conference selection and a second-team all-District member.
