Recruits will help Warriors fill needs

The only thing missing to cap off the University of Hawai'i football recruiting drive is a cap.

At today's signing ceremony at Alabama's Hoover High, featured in the MTV reality series, "Two-A-Days," defensive end Korey Reynolds will be bare-headed when he signs his national letter of intent with UH. He said he could not find a Warrior cap in Alabama.

It is one of the few missteps in the Warriors' recruiting effort, which will be punctuated with today's start of the signing period.

The Warriors entered with immediate needs at defensive end — both starters completed their eligibility in December — and in the defensive secondary. They also wanted to replenish the offensive line.

UH coach June Jones is not allowed to talk publicly about individual recruits until his news conference tomorrow, but he said, "We got a lot of the needs addressed. I feel very good about what we've done."

The Warriors landed two All-America defensive ends (Chris Leatigaga of Foothill College and Josh Leonard of Sierra College); a 4-star shutdown cornerback (Blinn College's Ryan Mouton) and a hard-hitting safety (Navarro College's Erik "E-Rob" Robinson).

They also added competition to an offensive line that lost three starters. Austin Hansen of Valencia High, Matagisila Lefiti of Mater Dei High and John Manu-Olevao of Kahuku High will sign letters of intent today.

"The first time I'm allowed — 7 a.m. — I'm going to sign the paper and make it a done deal," Hansen said.

The nation's most-productive offense received a boost. Running back Leon Wright-Jackson, who played at Nebraska as a freshman in 2005, is set to join the Warriors in 2007.

UH also secured commitments from two of the state's breath-taking slotbacks — Punahou School's Jeremiah Ostrowski and Kealakehe High's Gabe Tuata.

"I can't wait to be part of the program," Tuata said.

In addition, there are four grayshirts — 2006 commitments who were placed on scholarship last month — prepared to compete in spring drills beginning April 2. They are former 'Iolani quarterback Kiran Kepo'o, Damien running back Kealoha Pilares, Waimea defensive back Kenny Estes and wideout Eric Shaffer of Arkansas.

Two offensive linemen who will sign today — Levi Legay of Kealakehe and Drew Uperesa of Punahou — have agreed to gray shirt. They will go on scholarship in January 2008.

Meanwhile, Waianae linebacker George Kauwalu, who verbally committed to UH, said he wants time to mull an offer from Idaho.

Also, quarterback Shane Austin of Rio Mesa High (Oxnard, Calif.) has agreed to join UH as a non-scholarship player. He is 6 feet and 180 pounds.
