University of Hawai'i women's basketball coach Jim Bolla is expected to remain hospitalized this week following an undisclosed but successful medical procedure Monday.

"He's doing very well," UH associate coach Pat Charity said yesterday. "We're still not sure what exactly is going on there. We still don't have any results."

Bolla underwent the procedure at The Queen's Medical Center, and Charity said she was told by Bolla's wife, Dallas, results could be in by "Thursday or Friday."

"He's still in the hospital," Charity said. "He'll be there until Friday, as far as I know."

In the meantime, Charity will serve as interim head coach for at least two road games this week. The 'Bows (9-12 overall, 3-6 Western Athletic Conference) play at New Mexico State (9-12, 4-5) tomorrow and at Louisiana Tech (12-10, 7-2) on Saturday.

"I've been a head coach before," said Charity, who headed the Western Michigan program from 1990-97 before joining Hawai'i in 2004. "One thing I know is that you don't change anything this late in the season."

Bolla said he found out "probably three weeks ago" about his health issue, and told his team last week he would be taking medical leave. He did not elaborate on why he underwent the medical procedure to the team, he said.

"When the time is right, I'll tell people," Bolla said Sunday. "Right now is not the right time.

"Everything is going to be fine," he continued. "Everyone else is more worried than I am right now."

Bolla, who is a non-smoker, has battled a persistent cough for the past 2 1/2 weeks following a bout with the flu earlier in the year. "That's another reason why we're having some procedures done," he said. "Again, we don't know at this point. ... Other than the cough, I feel fine."

Hawai'i co-captain Pam Tambini said she respected Bolla's decision to not reveal why he was undergoing the procedure.

"I agree with him not telling us because it might be a distraction," she said. "There's so many questions, but at the same time it's kind of better that we don't know because if it is something serious, we may be distracted and be more worried about him, instead of finishing off the season."

Added co-captain Brittany Grice: "Everyone is wishing him the best possible recovery. Coach Bolla is a tough guy. He's always encouraging us to be tough."

Bolla spent yesterday watching a movie that was given to him in a care package purchased by the team, Charity said.

"He likes action movies," Grice said. "We got some advice from Dallas on what to get him."

Each team member chipped in "about $10 to $15" for the goodies that included Bolla's favorite snacks, Tambini said.

"We always notice little things on road trips," Tambini said. "He's really a junk-food person. He'll be eating Twizzlers and drinking soda in the morning instead of coffee. We just made a care package out of all those little things."

As for one of the gifted movies, "we gave him Collateral," Tambini said.
