2 politicos named to city commissions

Advertiser Staff

Two people prominent in Hawai'i politics — but from opposing political parties — recently were appointed to serve on commissions by Mayor Mufi Hannemann.

Hannemann named attorney and former state Rep. Quentin Kawananakoa — who recently ran for Congress as a Republican — to serve on the Fire Commission. And he selected business consultant and former state Sen. Mike McCartney, who is chairman of the Democratic Party of Hawai'i, to serve on the Police Commission.

On Wednesday, the City Council's Executive Matters Committee voted to approve the appointments. That poises them for full council approval at the Feb. 21 meeting.

Both commissions review the performance of their respective chiefs, the budget and operations of the department in the volunteer positions.
