Big Island summits pelted by winds up to 50 mph

Advertiser Staff

Southwest to west winds will be 30 mph to 50 mph on the Big Island summits, with higher gusts, the National Weather Service said.

A high-wind warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Friday.

The winds are associated with a strong jet stream just north of the Islands and will affect the upper slopes and summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

Sustained winds of 45 mph, or gusts of 60 mph or more can lead to property damage, the National Weather Service said.
