Six Isle surfers in 5th round

Advertiser Staff

Six Hawai'i surfers reached the fifth round of the Monster Energy Pro men's contest yesterday.

Only three heats of the fourth round were completed in 6- to 8-foot waves at the Banzai Pipeline yesterday morning before stormy conditions prompted officials to postpone the rest of the day.

The Hawai'i surfers advancing were Hank Gaskell, Rainos Hayes, Shane Dorian, Fred Patacchia Jr., Danny Fuller and Jamie O'Brien.

Dorian won his heat despite sustaining cuts on his shoulders and both arms after getting slammed on the reef.

Pancho Sullivan of Sunset Beach was supposed to compete yesterday, but he withdrew due to a back injury.
