Waipahu home fire caused $50,000 in damage

Advertiser Staff

The early-morning fire yesterday that burned a home in Waipahu caused an estimated $50,000 in damage, the Honolulu Fire Department said.

Firefighters were called to a building fire at 94-125 Hulahe St. at 5:35 a.m. yesterday. When they arrived they found a three-bedroom, single-story home on fire. They were able to contain the blaze to one bedroom and all 11 residents — seven adults and four children – were evacuated unharmed.

Damage to the building was estimated at $30,000, with $20,000 more in damage for the room's contents.

The residents refused assistance from the American Red Cross, according to HFD officials.

A HFD news release said that one of the residents had told them all occupants were at home sleeping when the fire occurred. One of them smelled the smoke and when looking into the back bedroom saw the fire in the room. They immediately left the area and alerted all the residents to evacuate.

Fire officials called the fire under control and extinguished at 5:53 a.m.
