High surf warning in effect for north, west shores

Advertiser Staff

Pro Bowl fans who've made it to the islands a day early still have time to catch a glimpse of the North Shore's notorious winter waves. The surf forecast calls for the waves to be 20 to 25 overnight and lower to 12 to 16 feet Friday.

Western shores will see a decrease from 12 to 17 footers down surf 5 to 10 feet in height. Surf in Waikiki, southern and eastern shores, will be 1 to 3 feet.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning until 6 a.m. Friday for north- and west-facing shores off O'ahu, Ni'iahau, Kaua'i, and Moloka'i. It also issued a high surf warning for the northern shores of Maui and western shores of the Big Island for the same time period.

After 6 a.m., the warning will be an advisory until 4 p.m.
