LIHU'E, Kaua'i—A park pavilion built by the community in 2004 was destroyed by fire last night.

The Kamalani Pavilion in Lydgate Park was part of a massive community project at the park that includes a playground, a maze-like bridge and other features.

Firefighters arrived at the burning wooden structure at 7:51 p.m. Thursday and had it extinguished by 10:26 p.m., but the 880-square-foot wooden covered pavilion was destroyed. There were no injuries. The value of the structure was estimated at $100,000.

Police and firefighters are investigating the blaze. Anyone with information can call Det. Carl Oliver at 241-1682, police dispatch at 241-1711 or Crimestoppers at 241-1887.
