DUI checkpoints in place for Pro Bowl weekend

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Police Department will be conducting impaired driver check points this weekend with the hopes of deterring drivers from drinking and driving.

Through Thursday, 10 people have died on O'ahu roads this year.

HPD is pairing with the Department of Transportation and other county police departments in the federal "52/12" sobriety checkpoints program. From Oct. 1 2006, to Sept. 30, 2007, police are conducting at least one sobriety check point every week. The checkpoints are set up at unannounced locations.

Police said they arrested 3,278 impaired drivers between Oct. 1, 2005, and Sept. 30, 2006.
