Rainbow Warriors rout Louisiana Tech, 74-50

Advertiser Staff

The Louisiana Tech curse is over for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team.

The Rainbow Warriors snapped a six-game losing streak against LaTech with a 74-50 romp over the Bulldogs Saturday night.

A crowd of 4,484 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched Hawai'i improve to 14-10 overall and 5-6 in the Western Athletic Conference. LaTech dropped to 7-17 and 5-7.

Bobby Nash led a balanced Hawai'i attack with 18 points and eight rebounds. Point guards Matt Gibson and Dominic Waters contributed 16 points each, and Gibson passed for a team-high five assists.

Hawai'i made a season-high 12 3-pointers, including 5-of-6 shooting from Gibson, and 4-of-4 from Waters.

Matt Lojeski, who played with a strained arch in his right foot, hit a 3-pointer early in the game to give the 'Bows a 6-3 lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

LaTech's Trey McDowell lived up to his first name, scoring 16 points in the first half, including four 3-pointers. His fourth 3 of the half cut Hawai'i's lead to 27-26 with 4:15 remaining.

But the 'Bows closed the half with a 13-2 run to take a 40-28 advantage at intermission.

Gibson had 13 points in the first half, including 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point range, while Waters added 11 points, including 3-of-3 shooting from 3-point range.

The 'Bows turned it into a rout midway through the second half. An alley-oop dunk by P.J. Owsley off a pass from Waters ignited a 14-0 run that gave Hawai'i an insurmountable 69-43 lead with 5:53 remaining.

McDowell finished with 18 points to lead LaTech. Chad McKenzie, the Bulldogs' leading scorer, finished with just five points — eight below his average.

The Hawai'i coaches wore white sneakers during Saturday night's game as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer awareness program.

The 'Bows will continue WAC play Monday, when they host New Mexico State at the Stan Sheriff Center.
