An off-duty sheriff's deputy who was shot early this morning at a Kapi'olani lounge died of his wounds at 5:40 this afternoon at The Queen's Medical Center, a department spokeswoman said.

A 33-year-old man is being held tonight in connection with the shooting at the Osake Sushi Bar and Lounge.

Police said the masked gunman, armed with a pistol, entered the Osake Sushi Bar and Lounge through a kitchen door shortly after closing time and ordered the cooks into the lounge area, where other employees were gathered.

"He ordered everyone down on the floor and he fired three to four rounds into the roof and the wall," homicide detective Bill Kato told the reporters at the scene.

The sheriff's deputy, who was working part-time at the bar, was shot three times after he and other employees jumped the suspect in an attempt to overpower him, Kato said.

Friends identified the victim as 27-year-old Daniel Brown Sanchez, a five-year employee of the Sheriff's Office assigned to work at District Court.

Friends said one of the bullets hit him in the chest.

Kato said other employees managed to hold the suspect down until police arrived and arrested him.

Video images of the suspect showed him being led away from the lounge with a bloody, bruised face. The suspect, who was armed with a .22-caliber pistol and wearing a military flack jacket under his shirt, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery, police said.

Investigators still were working on bringing charges in the case, said Criminal Investigation Division Lt. Ray Struss.

The restaurant, which features a large open lounge area and an extensive menu of sushi and Eurasian cuisine, has been open for about a year at 1700 Kapi'olani Boulevard, next to the 24-hour Fitness Center.

Employees at the restaurant declined to comment on the shooting.
