Chinese and Vietnamese festivities ring in new year

The Year of the Boar begins Feb. 18, but the celebrations have begun and are continuing this weekend. Among the events:

  • The Chinese New Year Festival, featuring food vendors, exhibits, martial arts demonstrations, feng shui presentations, fortune readings and entertainment, happens from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza. Admission is free. www.chinatownhi.com.

  • For plant lovers, there's a crab-claw narcissus and bonsai exhibit at the Academy Art Center at Linekona. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today and from 1 to 5 p.m. tomorrow. Admission is free. 532-8700.

  • The Vietnamese New Year Festival, full of entertainment, food booths, cultural displays, lion dances and other ethnic dances and kids' games, takes place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow at Kapi'olani Park bandstand. Admission is free. 389-4126.
