Tourists to folks back home: Wish you were here

By Shreveport Times Staff and Advertiser Staff

We may take the scenery for granted, but a a trip to Hawai'i still makes the news at many hometown newspapers and Web sites across the country.

The following is from today's Web page at the Shreveport Times under the heading, "Wish You Were Here."

TRAVELERS: Dr. Justin Wolfson and his wife, Lou Lewis, and Ira and Tama Nathan (of Shreveport).

THE SITE: They were en route to Hawaii from Los Angeles aboard the Island Princess cruise ship. In Hawaii, they visited the islands of Maui, Oahu, Kauai and Hawaii (or the Big Island).

DON'T MISS: Volcano National Park outside of Hilo on the Big Island. (They suggest you rent a car at the airport and drive directly there via Route 11.) The vast lava fields, craters and lava tube along the circle road are amazing. And the 40-minute drive through other lava fields down about 3,000 feet to the coast with fresh, even hot, lava deposits, steam vents and sometimes red-hot bubbling lava emerging from the ground is, well, fantastic. Also, "don't miss" the Artists' Market behind the courthouse at Lahaina, and surfing lessons on the beach next to the marina, both on Maui; and the Farmer's Market at the end of Kona's main street, on the Big Island.

MOST SPECTACULAR VIEW: From the ship at night, you could see Mount Kilauea, on the Big Island with streams of red lava and white steam as the lava hit the ocean.
