Sanchez homers again as UH sweeps Pacific

Advertiser Staff

Kris Sanchez hit his third home run in as many games, and Evan Zimny and Landon Hernandez had three hits apiece, to help Hawai'i complete a three-game sweep of Pacific, 8-3, today at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbows (7-2) won their fifth in a row in front of 1,253 before embarking on their first road trip of the season next week at UC Santa Barbara.

Hawai'i starter Josh Schneider went 4-plus innings, allowing an unearned run, three hits, two walks and two hit batters with three strikeouts. Jayson Kramer (1-0) allowed two runs, four hits and a walk in 2· innings of relief. Nick Rhodes pitched the final two innings.

Pacific starter Hunter Carnevale (1-1) went three innings, allowing four runs (three earned), six hits and a walk with two strikeouts for the Tigers (2-5)

The Rainbows got help from the elements — the sun and wind — to get on the board in the second inning.

Sanchez reached on second baseman Adam Ching's fielding error before Eli Christensen struck out. Evan Zimny's chop single went over first, sending Sanchez to third. Landon Hernandez then hit a high pop over second that Ching apparently lost in the sun and was affected by the wind, and fell for a single, scoring Sanchez and sending Zimny to second. But the next two batters mades outs to end the inning with UH ahead 1-0.

Hawai'i added three in the third. Nate Young led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Justin Frash's single to center. Brandon Haislet's sacrifice fly to center made it 2-0.

After Sanchez flied out to left, Christensen singled to left that left fielder Brett Manning misplayed into an error that allowed Frash to score and Christensen to take third. Zimny doubled to center to make it 4-0 before Hernandez flied to center to end the inning.

The Tigers scored in the fifth. Joey Centanni reached on shortstop Christensen's throwing error and took second when Greg Murray grounded out to the pitcher. Denis Hill was hit by a pitch before Ching doubled home a run to put runners at second and third. Schneider then hit Joe Oliveira with a pitch to load the bases. Schneider was pulled for Kramer, who got Mike Walker to ground to first for an inning-ending double play to keep the score 4-1.

Hawai'i scored twice in the fifth off reliever Jake Wild. Sanchez hit his third home run in as many games to start the fifth and to extend his hitting streak to 13 games spanning to last season. Christensen walked and one out later took third on Hernandez's single to left-center. Ryan Asato then squeezed home Christensen, who was safe at home under the tag. Franco reached on a single to short to load the bases, but Wild struck out the next two batters to keep it 6-1.

Pacific got two in the sixth off Kramer on a two-run single by Hill. Hawai'i nailed a runner at the plate earlier in the inning on a relay from center fielder Haislet to shortstop Christensen to catcher Hernandez after a double by Zach Chamberlain.

Hawai'i continued its scoring in the sixth. Haislet led off with a single to center, stole second and, one out later, took third when Christensen flied out to deep right. Ziminy's ground single to center scored Haislet to make it 7-3 and ended Wild's day for Jason Haar, who started the game at designated hitter. Hernandez beat out a single to third, but third baseman Justin Baum's throwing error allowed Zimny to score and Hernandez to reach third. Asato grounded out to second to end the inning with UH ahead 8-3.
