State pension fund gains $500 million in 4th quarter

The market value of the state Employees' Retirement System's assets increased by more than a half-billion dollars during the last three months of 2006. buoyed by gains in its investments in small-company and international company stocks.Callan Associates, an adviser to the pension fund, said there was a 5.6 percent increase during the quarter, pushing the total value of the fund to $10.7 billion at the end of December. That represented an almost $511 million increase from Sept. 30.
