Hawai'i shrimp expert to speak at Mainland conference

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i-based shrimp aquaculture expert Shaun Moss is one of six authorities scheduled to speak at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in San Francisco.

Friday's symposium, "Science and Technology Advances in Sustainable Farmed Seafood Production," will include Moss's presentation, "Science-based Practical Aquatic Animal Breeding Programs," which will highlight Oceanic Institute's successful breeding program for marine shrimp founded on specific pathogen free broodstock.

Moss, who leads the shrimp department at Oceanic Institute, an affiliate of Hawai'i Pacific University, has been responsible for managing its USDA-funded shrimp program, established to develop a selective breeding program for specific pathogen free Pacific White Shrimp, or Litopenaeus vannamei, and for the development of the organization's biosecure shrimp production systems. Since joining Oceanic Institute in 1986 as a research assistant, Moss has worked on projects that focused on improving effluent quality in aquaculture ponds, has led international research that concentrated on pond microbial communities, and as a technical committee member of the U.S. Marine Shrimp Farming Program.
