Advertiser Staff

Big Island police are looking for the driver of a car who ran over a 2-year-old girl in the Orchidland subdivision in Puna on Saturday.

The girl, Abygail Arquitola, was with her family at a friend's house on 38th Avenue when someone ran her over at the rear of the property Saturday evening. The driver left the scene, possibly not knowing that the child had been hit. The girl was taken to Hilo Medical Center by firefighters, where she died at 7:19 p.m.

Anyone with information is asked to call officer Andres Fojas at (808) 961-8889. Police have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy.

KAUA'I

WAILUA MAN CHARGED IN FIRE

Police have reduced charges against David Aguiar, 38, of Wailua in connection with the fire that destroyed the Kaua'i Kamalani Pavilion on Thursday.

Aguiar was being held in the Kaua'i Police Department cellblock because he was unable to post the required $100 bail, police said.

No one was injured in the blaze.

The pavilion in Lydgate Park was built by the community in 2004 and was part of a community project that includes a playground, a maze-like bridge and other features.

Police initially had charged Aguiar with first-degree arson, but reduced the charge to the misdemeanor "failure to control widely dangerous means."

The blockage is believed to have been caused by grease, according to the city Department of Environmental Services.

Warning signs were posted along Kewalo Basin park, Kewalo Basin, Point Panic and Kaka'ako Waterfront Park. Water samples were taken, and the public is advised to heed the warning signs.
