STATE AID HELPS KALUANUI EFFORT

Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center of Maui received a $500,000 state grant-in-aid to purchase Kaluanui and 14 additional acres. In 2005, the center was challenged to raise $5.5 million for the property. The center had called the upcountry Maui site home for 30 years through support from Maui Land & Pineapple Co. The grant was obtained with support from the Maui state legislative team and Gov. Linda Lingle, allowing the property to be secured as a public trust in perpetuity, center officials said. The balance was obtained through community support.
