Hawai'i manufacturing jobs fall by 5.6% in 2006

Hawai'i experienced a 5.6 percent loss in manufacturing employment in 2006, according to the 2007 Hawaii Manufacturers Directory, which is published annually by Manufacturers' News Inc. Hawai'i lost 1,545 industrial jobs and 68 plants since January 2006.

Manufacturers' News reports Hawai'i is home to 1,265 manufacturing companies employing 25,924 workers compared with 1,333 plants and 27,469 jobs reported a year earlier. Hawai'i ranks 50th in the nation for number of manufacturing jobs.

According to the 2007 edition, the food industry ranks as Hawai'i's largest manufacturing sector with 221 companies and more than 3,800 jobs listed in the new edition. Major Hawai'i food plants include the Maui Land and Pineapple Company, Dole Foods, and the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co.
